What We Believe
United Methodists
The Book of Discipline
United Methodists share a common heritage with all Christians. According to our foundational statement of beliefs found in The Book of Discipline, we share the following basic affirmations in common with all Christian communities.
We believe in one God, who exists in three distinct persons, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Each person of the Trinity is equally the one God in being, essence, character, power and eternal qualities.
We believe that Jesus is the Son of God, our Savior, who came to earth in human form to reconcile humanity to God. We believe Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, was crucified died and buried, and ascended into heaven. We believe Jesus will return to earth and all who believe in him will have eternal life.
We believe that that the Holy Spirit lives within each follower to empower a life that reflects the value and character of Jesus.
We believe that the Church is the body of Christ, and each member is called to serve within God’s missions to transform the world. The Church is God’s vehicle on earth to bring justice and mercy to all people.
We believe the Bible is God’s word and is the primary authority for faith and practice.
